PISTON MAHLE

Sell Piston / Torak / Seher Brand MAHLE

The piston (also known as torak or seher) is located inside the cylinder liner and works with a vertical up-and-down motion. This movement functions to compress the mixture of diesel fuel and air that enters the cylinder. The piston also serves as the receiver of combustion pressure and converts that pressure into energy to rotate the crankshaft through the connecting rod.

To ensure that the mixture of diesel fuel and air inside the cylinder can be compressed properly, the clearance between the piston and the cylinder liner wall must be tight, while still leaving enough space for material expansion caused by combustion heat. This clearance is called piston clearance, with variations between 0.02 mm and 0.12 mm. The clearance size is adjusted according to the expansion that may occur under combustion temperatures reaching up to 250°C. The tightness between the piston and the cylinder liner wall is supported by the installation of piston rings on the piston.

Pistons are made from a material blend of aluminum and other metals (aluminum alloy), which must have the following characteristics:

  • Lightweight, so the piston can easily perform repeated up-and-down strokes, enabling the engine to achieve high RPM.

  • Durable against pressure and explosions caused by the combustion of air and fuel.

  • Resistant to excessive expansion from the very high heat produced during combustion inside the cylinder.

The piston is also equipped with a piston pin and circlip, which function as the connector between the piston and the connecting rod through the bushing hole.
